Similarweb Key Features
Traffic Analytics
Similarweb excels in traffic analysis, giving users a detailed overview of a website’s traffic sources, user engagement, and geographic distribution.
Market Intelligence
One of Similarweb’s standout features is its market intelligence reports, which offer insights into industry benchmarks, market share, and overall performance compared to competitors.
Competitor Insights
Like Semrush, Similarweb allows users to analyze competitor’s traffic and performance metrics, although its focus is more on traffic trends and user behavior than on SEO specifics.

Search Tracking
Similarweb’s search tracking feature provides information on top-performing organic and paid keywords for both websites and apps, depending on the industry. It includes the Rank Tracker, which features keywords, keyword trends, top pages, competitors, and SERP features.

Semrush .Trends vs Similarweb
Since Semrush .Trends has similar features as Similarweb, let’s compare these two as well.
Let’s have a look at the key features from both:
Feature/Aspect | Semrush .Trends | Similarweb |
Overview | Semrush .Trends provides in-depth insights into market trends and competitor strategies, focusing on specific industries and user behavior. | Similarweb offers comprehensive website traffic analytics and insights into market dynamics across various industries. |
Data Sources | Gathers data from a combination of proprietary sources, including clickstream data and third-party integrations, ensuring a rich dataset for analysis. | Primarily relies on clickstream data, public data, and its proprietary algorithm to estimate traffic and engagement metrics across websites. |
Competitor Analysis | Provides detailed benchmarking against competitors, allowing users to understand traffic performance and growth opportunities within their niche. | Enables users to analyze competitors’ traffic sources, audience demographics, and engagement metrics to identify market positioning. |
Market Insights | Focuses on specific market segments, helping users to identify trends, top players, and emerging growth opportunities in their industry. | Offers broad insights across multiple industries, showcasing traffic trends, market share, and competitor positioning. |
Audience Analytics | Provides data on audience interests, behaviors, and demographics to help refine targeting strategies for marketing campaigns. | Similarweb also provides audience insights but may not have the same level of granularity in demographic details compared to Semrush. |
Traffic Overview | Users can analyze traffic metrics, including traffic volume, sources, and geographic distribution, helping to inform strategic decisions. | Offers a detailed traffic overview, including direct, referral, search volume, and social traffic sources. However, its data may not always be as granular as Semrush’s. |
Forecasting | Includes forecasting tools that allow businesses to project future trends based on historical data, giving users a strategic advantage. | Provides traffic estimates and historical trends but may not include comprehensive forecasting tools like those in Semrush .Trends. |
Usability | User-friendly interface with customizable dashboards and visualizations for easy access to insights. | Also features a user-friendly interface, with a focus on quick access to traffic stats and competitor comparisons. |
Pricing | Offers flexible pricing plans depending on the features chosen, generally perceived as cost-effective for small to medium businesses. | Similarweb has various pricing tiers, which can be higher compared to Semrush for similar functionalities. |
Integrations | Integrates with other Semrush tools, allowing for a cohesive digital marketing strategy across SEO, content, and advertising. | Offers integrations with multiple marketing and analytics tools but may not be as tightly integrated as Semrush’s ecosystem. |
Considering the above, Semrush .Trends becomes a more versatile solution than Similarweb in that it is already included in Semrush’s suite of tools, offering a more integrated approach to competitor analysis.
The automated monitoring, extensive database, and broad geographic coverage by Semrush .Trends makes it a go-to tool for marketers aiming to outsmart the competition.
Semrush vs Similarweb: Scenarios and Use Cases
While Similarweb has its strengths, most of its features (if not all) are already available in the Semrush suite, albeit in a slightly different way.
To better illustrate this, let’s look at use cases that can be done with Semrush and Similarweb and see which tools/features of these two platforms can be used.
Scenario #1: Online Store for Art Supplies
Imagine you run an online store that specializes in art supplies — paint, watercolor, markers, and other creative tools.
Your target market includes both hobbyists and professional artists, and your goal is to drive organic traffic, optimize your paid advertising campaigns, and outshine your competitors in the search results.
Step 1: Keyword Research and Content Strategy
For an art supply store, ranking for product-related keywords is essential.
Using Semrush’s Keyword Magic Tool or Similarweb’s Keyword Research Tool, you can discover high-traffic keywords such as “best watercolor sets for beginners” or “professional paint markers.” This tool allows you to filter by keyword difficulty and volume, ensuring that you target the right balance of competitive and niche terms.
For example, if the keyword “professional watercolor sets” has a high search volume but stiff competition, Semrush can help you find long-tail variations like “best professional watercolor sets for portrait artists.”
These long-tail keywords may have lower search volumes, but they’re often easier to rank for and can drive more targeted traffic.
Use Case: Optimizing Blog Content
An art supply store can also create valuable blog content based on keyword research.
For example:
- Write a blog titled “5 Best Watercolor Sets for Beginners in 2024”, targeting the specific needs of new artists.
- Use Semrush’s SEO Content Template to ensure the content is optimized for the chosen keyword and includes related semantic terms like “affordable watercolor sets,” watercolor paint quality,” and “beginner techniques.”
By strategically publishing content around trending art-related terms, you can drive organic traffic while educating and engaging your audience.
Step 2: Competitor Analysis
Semrush’s Competitor Analysis tool is more invaluable for an online art store. By analyzing competitors like Blick Art Materials or Jerry’s Artarama, you can see which keywords they rank for, their estimated traffic, and what backlinks contribute to their authority. The same can be done on Similarweb’s Similar Sites tool.
Using Semrush’s Traffic Analytics, you can monitor how much traffic competitors are getting and identify their top-performing pages. To monitor the top performing pages in SimilarWeb, you can go to the Website Analysis menu, then scroll down to Search and choose Organic Overview.
Identifying the top pages is important, though. For example, if a competitor’s blog post on “How to Choose the Best Paint Brushes” is driving significant traffic, you can create a similar, more comprehensive post, or offer video tutorials that may attract the same audience.
Step 3: Product Listing Optimization and Paid Search
For paid advertising, Semrush’s PPC Keyword Tool can help you plan highly targeted Google Ads and other search engine campaigns. Similarweb does not have a similar tool.
For instance, you might find that bidding on specific keywords like “buy watercolor paint online” or “discount acrylic markers” will yield better ROI than more generic terms.
Additionally, Semrush’s Advertising Research tool allows you to see your competitors’ ad copies, what keywords they’re bidding on, and how much they spend on each campaign. Similarweb can do the same using its Paid Search Overview tool, but it’s not as comprehensive as Semrush.
Scenario #2: IT Company Serving APAC Region
An IT company providing services throughout the APAC region has a different set of challenges.
The company must focus on generating leads, maintaining visibility in a competitive market, and understanding the needs of various regions like Australia, Singapore, and Japan.
Step 1: Localized Keyword Research
Semrush’s Global and Local Keyword Research features are invaluable when trying to target multiple countries. In this case, the company would want to identify specific keywords that perform well in different regions. Similarweb provides worldwide data only. If you want country-specific data (available for 50+ countries only), you need to get a custom plan.
Semrush allows you to filter keywords by country and language. The IT company can use this feature to optimize its site for searches like “cloud services in Singapore,” “IT security solutions in Australia,” or “managed IT services Japan.”
By tailoring the SEO strategy to each region, the company can improve its chances of appearing in local search results.
Use Case: Region-Specific Content Marketing
Based on keyword research, the company can create region-specific blog posts, case studies, or whitepapers that address local pain points.
Using Semrush’s SEO Writing Assistant, the company can ensure that each piece of content is optimized not just for technical SEO, but also for readability and tone based on the target region. Similarweb, on the other hand, does not have this feature.
Step 2: Competitor Research and Market Trends
In the IT industry, staying ahead of competitors is critical. Semrush’s Market Explorer tool and Similarweb’s Market Analysis tool both enable the company to monitor the broader industry landscape in the APAC region. It provides insight into market leaders, their strategies, and emerging trends.
For instance, the company can benchmark itself against competitors like Tata Consultancy Services or Infosys in Singapore and Australia.
By using Semrush’s EyeOn tool, it can track its competitors’ marketing campaigns, new product launches, and promotional activities in near real-time. Similarweb does have a similar tool that monitors competitor activities—Ads Tracker—which can only be used if you have a custom plan.
Use Case: Adjusting Marketing Strategies Based on Competitor Insights
If Semrush shows that a competitor is running a successful paid campaign on “IT support services for remote work,” the company can create similar content or ads that highlight its remote work support packages.
The company could also use Semrush’s Position Tracking tool or Similarweb’s Rank Tracking to monitor keyword rankings in multiple locations and adjust content or advertising efforts based on shifts in competitor performance.
Step 3: PPC Campaign Optimization
With clients spread across multiple countries, the IT company needs to run geographically targeted PPC campaigns. Semrush’s PPC Keyword Tool allows marketers to create geo-targeted campaigns and filter out irrelevant keywords. Again, Similarweb does not have a tool that functions the same.
For example, the company could bid on keywords like “cloud infrastructure services APAC” or “cybersecurity solutions Singapore” and set custom bid adjustments for different regions.
Both Semrush’s Advertising Research tool and Similarweb’s Paid Search tool also provide insight into competitors’ ad strategies, helping the company optimize its own campaigns.
Scenario 3: T-shirt Printing Company in the US
For a US-based t-shirt printing company, SEO, marketing analysis, and content marketing tools can help drive online sales, improve search visibility, and expand brand reach.
While Semrush can help with all of these, Similarweb can only help with global SEO research and market analysis. For competitor ads monitoring, Similarweb’s Brand Protection can be used, but only if you have the custom plan.
The company’s goal is to dominate local search results while also reaching national customers who want custom t-shirts for events, businesses, or personal use.
Step 1: Local SEO and Competitor Benchmarking
The first step for the t-shirt company is to focus on local SEO for customers searching for terms like “custom t-shirts near me” or “t-shirt printing in [City].” Using Semrush’s Local SEO Toolkit, the company can optimize its Google My Business (GMB) profile, build local citations, and improve its chances of ranking in map packs and local search results.
Use Case: Optimizing for Local Search
By analyzing the top local competitors in Semrush’s Competitor Analysis, the company can find out which keywords competitors are ranking for, what content is driving the most traffic, and where there are gaps in the market.
For example, if a competitor is ranking for “bulk custom t-shirts for events,” but not “eco-friendly t-shirt printing,” the company can create content around eco-friendly materials and printing methods to attract a niche audience.
Step 2: Content Marketing for Branding
Semrush’s SEO Content Template and Topic Research tools can help the t-shirt company develop a content strategy that aligns with customer interests.
By researching popular topics like “design your own t-shirt for business events” or “best t-shirt printing materials,” the company can create blog posts, how-to guides, and videos that provide value while promoting its services.
Use Case: Building a Content Strategy
By using Semrush’s Content Marketing Platform, the company can plan, create, and distribute content that targets its audience at various stages of the buying funnel.
For example:
- Top-of-the-funnel content could include blog posts like “10 Creative T-Shirt Designs for Corporate Events.”
- Middle-of-the-funnel content could focus on specific services like “Custom T-Shirts for Small Business Branding.”
- Bottom-of-the-funnel content could be landing pages optimized for transactional keywords like “order custom t-shirts online.”
Step 3: E-commerce and Paid Advertising
For e-commerce businesses, Semrush’s Product Listing Ads feature is particularly useful. The t-shirt company can use Semrush to optimize its Google Shopping ads, focusing on keywords like “bulk custom t-shirts,” “design your own t-shirt,” or “personalized t-shirts for teams.”
Use Case: Optimizing Google Shopping Ads
Using Semrush’s PPC Keyword Tool and Advertising Research, the company can monitor competitors’ product listings, ad spend, and keywords.
This insight allows the company to fine-tune its campaigns by focusing on high-conversion keywords and adjusting bids based on competitor performance.

Verdict: Semrush
SEO Tools
- Semrush: Excels in keyword research, site audits, backlink analytics, SERP analysis, and position tracking, enabling users to refine their SEO strategies effectively.
- Similarweb: Also provides keyword research tools, rank tracking, site audit, and backlink analytics. However, the focus is primarily on traffic analytics and not SEO strategies.
Verdict: Semrush

Verdict: Semrush
Market Insights
- Semrush: Features tools like Market Explorer, allowing users to benchmark against competitors and gain insights into industry trends.
- Similarweb: Provides market insights, primarily focusing on website performance metrics.
Verdict: Both
Local Business Tools
- Semrush: Offers comprehensive features like Google Business Profile management, online review management, automatic business listings, and precise local rankings data, all designed to help local businesses enhance their visibility and reputation effectively.
- Similarweb: The platform lacks the specific features tailored for managing and optimizing local business presence.

- Similarweb: Focused on data rather than insights and strategies, which may hinder marketers looking to align their content strategy with performance metrics.
Verdict: Semrush
Data Accuracy
- Semrush: The data is accumulated and approximated from the user behavior of over 200 million real internet users and over a hundred different apps and browser extensions.
- Similarweb: Data is aggregated from publicly available data. Users may find discrepancies when comparing Similarweb data to internal analytics or other platforms, which can lead to misguided marketing decisions.
Verdict: Semrush
Value for Money
- Semrush: For the price of $139.95 per month for the Pro Plan, you can really get value for your money as it already includes the SEO and Advertising tools. If you want to include .Trends, it’s an additional $289 per month per person.
- Similarweb: Priced at $199 per month. If you’d like to include Rank Tracking, it’s an additional cost of $219 per month for the Starter and Professional Plans, but it’s included with the custom Team plan.
Verdict: Semrush (more tools for roughly the same cost)
Overall Verdict
While both Semrush and Similarweb provide valuable insights for digital marketers, in my experience, Semrush definitely stands out.
If you analyze it, Similarweb’s function falls under just one of Semrush’s main tools. There’s a whole other side of Semrush that businesses can use on top of competitor research, benchmarking, and analysis.
You can see by the sample use cases and scenarios that we discussed how Semrush can help with almost all of a business’s digital marketing needs. We are somehow left wanting with Similarweb.
Semrush has consistently proven to be an invaluable asset, offering deeper insights and more precise recommendations that have significantly enhanced my marketing efforts. So, if you want to take your digital marketing and website publishing game to the next level, I highly recommend trying Semrush.
